Audiences
Updated over 2 weeks ago

Our platform offers an easy way to build even the most complex target audiences using AND, OR, and NOT logic statements.

Creating an Audience

To create an audience, go to the Audiences tab:

In audiences, you can see any audiences you’ve previously created in “My audiences,” along with any audiences shared by your team, “Shared audiences,” and those created by us, “GWI audiences”. Navigate to these folders using the menu at the top of the page:

To create a new audience, click on "Create new Audience" on the right-hand side:

This takes you to the page where you begin creating your new audience.

Adding an Attribute

Attributes are the building blocks of your audience. To start adding attributes, first select the GWI dataset, Waves, and Locations you’d like to use to create your audience. Keep in mind the Waves and Locations are used to filter out the sample size you see for your audience it will not be applied as an attribute to your audience:

Once you’ve chosen your dataset, waves, and locations you then click on the 'Add an attribute' button:

This opens a menu that allows you to browse the data set and add the relevant attributes:

You can add single data points or full questions. For this example, let’s start by creating a simple audience of men:

Once you’ve selected your attribute(s), click Apply X attributes to add them to your audience, and you’ve now successfully added your first attribute:

Grouping Attributes

You can add multiple attributes at once using the "Add an Attribute" menu in the steps above. In this example, we’re adding two attributes to create an audience of men who have an interest in cooking:

Alternatively, once you’ve added one attribute, you can click "Add an attribute" or "Datapoints" within your group to build it out further:

To add a separate group of attributes, click on 'Add group'. This opens the "Add an Attribute" menu for your next group:

In this example, we’ve added two attributes: Males and Cooking. We are looking at Internet users who are male and have an interest in cooking.

Switching between AND and OR

To change the connections between your attributes from "AND" to "OR" (either within the same group of attributes or between groups), click on the statement. This will change the connection from one statement to the other. Here, we’ve combined our two groups with an "OR" statement:

By clicking on the "OR", we can change this connection to "AND":

Using the EXCLUDE statement

If you want to exclude certain attributes from your audience, just use the exclude function. At the top of your attribute group, there’s a drop-down menu labeled "Include":

Click on this and select "Exclude":

As a result, people with that attribute won’t be included in your audience:

Count Coding

Count coding allows you to select the number of attributes within a given selection that applies to your audience and make sure they agree with at least a defined number of attributes selected.

At the top of your attribute group, there’s a drop-down menu labeled "ANY":

Click on this and choose between "All" or "At least".

Next, select the number of attributes you want them to agree with; in this example, we’ve specified at least 3:

Now, your audience will include only people who’ve selected at least three of the attributes in your group.

Saving an Audience

When you’ve created your audience, you can check the audience size in the top right-hand corner:

When you’re ready to save, click "Save changes" in the top right-hand corner:

You’ll then be prompted to change the audience's name in a pop-up. Once you’ve done this, click "Save". Your audience will now appear in your "Saved Audiences" folder.

When your audience has been saved you have the ability to make more edits and save it as new while keeping your original audience.

You can do this by making edits to the original audience and then clicking on "Save as new".

Once you’ve saved your audience in the main audience tab you’ll see your original audience and the new one.

Instant Insights and Summarize

Once you’ve saved your audience, you’ll be able to click on “View instant insights” at the top-right corner of your screen.

This will automatically generate top insights that are unique to your audience. You can learn more about how Instant insights works here.

You can also click “Summarize” at the top-right corner of your screen to summarize your audience.

Maintaining your Audience

Duplicating an Audience

To duplicate an audience, in the audiences menu click on the icon at the end of an audience name.

This opens an options menu, then select "Duplicate":

The audience will be copied, and (1) is added to the end of the audience name.

Sharing an Audience

To share an audience, in the audiences menu click on the icon at the end of an audience name.

This opens an options menu, then select "Share":

You can share your audiences with people in your organization. You can share it with individuals by applying their email address or with everyone in your organization by clicking the “Share with everyone at…” button.

Updating shared or GWI audiences

If you want to update a shared or GWI audience, use the steps above to duplicate it. Then, select the duplicated audience in your "My Audiences" folder and add attributes, just as you would with an audience you’ve already created.
