Creating a Proxy for Social Grade
Updated over 2 weeks ago

If you're a marketer or researcher in the UK, there's a good chance you’re familiar with the NRS social grading system - the one that assigns people to one of six groups (A, B, C1, C2, D, E) based on the occupation of the main earner in their household.

Our data sets don't feature market-specific classifications like this, and for good reasons:

  • We don't always ask the highly specific questions required to recreate them (we don't ask about the occupation of the main earner in each respondent's household, for instance)

  • Segmentations featured in our data sets need to be usable across multiple markets (with the exception of GWI USA)

Nonetheless, it's possible to create a proxy for this segmentation and others like it in GWI Core using the Socio-Economic Segmentation. For instance, groups 1, 2 and 3 of the Socio Economic Segmentation account for roughly 55% of the online population in the UK, making it similar in size to the ABC1 group. Similarly, groups 4 and 5 account for the remaining 20% and 25% of the online population, making them good proxies for the C2 and DE groups respectively.
